Here’s some history of Bike Month in May started in 1956 from an article in the League of American Bicyclists:

Bike Month History

For fifty-five years, National Bike Month has been the perfect time for new or returning riders to get back on the saddle and ride their bike to work. Originally the Cycle Trade Association called the month American Bike Month but in 1956 it evolved to Bike Month. Along with the name change, Bike Month became more about promoting cycling and safe bicycling, not just selling bicycles.

NBC news on Fargo Flood fight “Mother Nature knows how to throw a party”

Thanks to all the student volunteers and all the others that helped make and now deploy these sandbags to protect for a major flood. THANK YOU!

Here’s a clip on NBC Nightly news yesterday and on Today. This was at John and Erin Bertel’s neighborhood where hundreds of South High Bruins made short work of protecting the area.

http://www.nbcnews.com/video/nightly-news/51681946#51681946

We started promptly at 9:30 and were done by noon in this neighborhood with about 30,000 bags to protect to 40′.

In comparison, we needed 800,000 bags in this neighborhood in 2009 to protect to 42’6. With home buyouts and several permanent dikes in backyards, it would have taken 200,000 bags for the same 42’6 protection now, 600,000 less bags this year.

We’re continuing to improve each year with more permanent protection and remove homes in vulnerable areas where FEMA certified protection cannot be placed to protect the city to 42’6 by 2016.

Fargo prepares for major flood  Thank you to all the student and neighborhood volunteers, engineers, firefighters, National Guard, and all! It’s inspiring to work with all these incredible people toward a common cause.

Our challenge is to protect our community so we don’t have to sandbag every flood and that work is ongoing. With 43 sections of land in Fargo’s footprint we have 56 miles of perimeter.

As that important work is underway, we need to look for opportunities to harness this incredible positive energy and community spirit that engages these wonderful people to work together to accomplish other community goals when it’s not a crisis.

The GO2030 Key Initiative rankings below are a compilation of responses from thousands of community members comments through GO2030 online Mind Mixer, public forums, and surveys.  Click this for full list

Key Initiative Guiding Principles identified through GO2030 public responses:

  1. Permanent Flood Protection Water and Environment
  2. Promote Infill Neighborhoods, Infill, and New Development
  3. Public Art Arts and Culture
  4. Bicycle/Pedestrian Infrastructure Transportation
  5. Design Standards Neighborhoods, Infill, and New Development
  6. City -Wide Trail Loop Health Public
  7. Gathering Spaces with Arts and Culture
  8. Incentives for Energy Efficiency and Renewable Energy Production
  9. Quality New Development Neighborhoods, Infill, and New Development
  10. Year-Round Recreational Opportunities promote Health

These and many more are all areas we are working with the community to improve to make Fargo an even more safe, attractive, interesting, vibrant, and resilient city where people want to live, learn, work, and play.

If you haven’t joined in the fun, we’re going to continue this community outreach to hear your ideas.  We want to hear from you, sign up for GO 2030 Mind Mixer Townhall and weigh in.  We never know where the best ideas will come from, and with your help, we can make the best ideas win!

First 50 degree day of 2013 on the way!

YAY sunshine! 50 degrees has been a long time coming in 2013. We have a lot of sunshine and warm to make up. My poor tulips started popping up March 18th and now are starting to come in earnest.

Soon, and very soon, they will look like this:

Bruins show up strong at Sandbag Central with 90,000 bags!

Thanks to the Fargo South Bruins and all the other volunteers Monday that produced 98,000 bags. The Bruins kicked out the vast majority of those, 90,000 by the end of their shift at 2 p.m. THANK YOU!

If you’re interested in working with a lot of great volunteers, the best time to come is 3 – 7 p.m. as it takes about 72 people to keep one spider going at full bore. That’s 7,000 bags an hour!

I had the chance to stack pallets for these great young women Bruins yesterday. They were an incredible team and had fun while not spilling hardly a granule of sand! Thanks Jessica (on left) and crew!

Here’s another team of Bruins getting ready for another run after lunch. Some are dancing to get ready to go! Thank you all for your great effort!

If you would like to help, you can get in on the fun, swing by Sandbag Central anytime between 3 and 7 today or Wednesday. You can see where volunteers are most needed here http://volunteerstatus.cityoffargo.com/ and call 476-4000 to join in.

Mother Nature is showing winter an awful lot of love this year

Sandbag Central is starting up again on Thursday at 8 a.m. to make sandbags while the snow flies. They will be open 8 a.m. –  7 p.m. Thursday, through Saturday this week, then start up again on Monday the 22nd through Saturday.

If you would like to help, you can get in on the fun by checking where we need the most volunteers here http://volunteerstatus.cityoffargo.com/ and call 476,4000 to join in.

Thanks to the incredible volunteers, the city now has about 1,250,000 sandbags on hand. To be prepared for the worst, engineers have suggested we build an additional 500,000 bags for the city and Cass County is evaluating how many more they might need.

The recent wet snow and late melt is making for a very late crest for whatever flood level it turns out to be. The latest crest in the last 125 years was April 19th, the average crest is about April 11th.

These young leaders from Discovery tied them high and let them fly! Zach is a great twister and Larry on the right is a master at stacking beautiful square pallets. It was great working with this team last Friday.

Thanks to all the city staff and firefighters for keeping this operation running smooth. After the last shift Friday, we cleaned it all up ready to go again, which we are.

The power of one. This gentleman has come almost everyday to help out wherever he can. Thank you!!

You can get in on the action by checking where we need the most volunteers here http://volunteerstatus.cityoffargo.com/ and call 476,4000 to join in the fun.
