DORGAN ANNOUNCES WORLD-CLASS LINE-UP FOR ENERGY EXPO
Former U.S. House leader, oil CEO, Energy Department official, Air Force general to be featured
Wednesday, July 28, 2010
(WASHINGTON, D.C.) – U.S. Senator Byron Dorgan (D-N.D.) has announced a slate of widely recognized energy leaders and innovators as keynote speakers for the upcoming 2010 Great Plains Energy Expo and Showcase taking place September 20 and 21 in Bismarck.

The featured speakers include Richard Gephardt, former Democratic Leader of the U.S. House of Representatives; Clarence Cazalot, president and CEO of Marathon Oil Corp., Dr. Arun Majumdar, director of the Department of Energy’s Advanced Research Projects Agency; and retired U.S. Air Force General Charles Wald.

“This is a great line-up of energy leaders who will provide important insight to our discussion about how we boost domestic energy production, reduce our dangerous dependence on foreign energy, continue to reduce emissions, and provide more clean energy jobs at home,” Dorgan said. “I’m encouraging everyone in the region interested in energy issues to attend this premier event and hear from these world-class speakers.”

Gephardt was a powerful and respected U.S. congressman who served in public office for 28 years, including eight years as the senior Democrat in the House of Representatives. He has extensive experience and insight into federal policy matters, especially energy issues. He also was a candidate for U.S. President in 2004 and 1988.

“As Americans begin to grapple with the worst oil spill in our history, I applaud Senator Dorgan for convening the summit to spotlight energy policy,” Gephardt said. “Given his leadership, I carry the highest hopes for a productive dialogue in Bismarck. Learning from our country’s energy innovators and producers first-hand is a step toward a comprehensive solution to our nation’s energy challenges.”

Cazalot is a major player in America’s petroleum industry. He serves as Marathon Oil Corp.’s president and chief executive officer and is a member of its board of directors. He’s worked for the company since 2000. Prior to Marathon, Cazalot held leadership positions with Texaco Inc.

Dr. Majumdar is a leading energy technology innovator and pioneer. He’s the first person to head the Department of Energy’s Advanced Research Projects Agency-Energy, which is devoted to cutting-edge energy research and development. Prior to holding this position, Majumdar was a vice president at the Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory and a University of California, Berkeley professor of mechanical engineering and materials science and engineering.

General Wald is one of the nation’s most accomplished and important military leaders. He was the four star general who served as deputy commander of the Headquarters for U.S. European Command located in Stuttgart, Germany. The installation manages U.S. airmen and troops who serve overseas in 91 different countries. General Wald has extensive experience in public policy and has served as an advisor to the Air Force chief of staff. He’s also a 1971 graduate of North Dakota State University.

The Great Plains Energy Expo and Showcase is a collaborative effort between Senator Dorgan, Bismarck State College, the Great Plains Energy Corridor office, Red River Valley Research Corridor office, and Bismarck engineering firm Kadrmas, Lee and Jackson. The event will feature exhibitors, speakers and workshops by key energy industry leaders. Keynote presentations and exhibitor showcases are open to the public.

Registration for workshops and more information about the event can be found on the Web by visiting http://www.bismarckstate.edu/gpee.

The Great Plains Energy Expo and Showcase is part of Dorgan’s “Great Plains Energy Corridor” initiative, aimed at bolstering energy production and use in the Upper Great Plains to help reduce America’s dependence on foreign energy. He serves as a senior member of the Senate’s Energy and Natural Resources Committee and as Chairman of the Energy and Water Development Appropriations Subcommittee.
